South Africans should do more to care for mentally disabled children in society said former president Nelson Mandela at his brithday.

South Africans should do more to care for mentally disabled children in society and to remove the stigma with which they have to live, said former president Nelson Mandela at his brithday celebrations on Saturday.

He was speaking in the newly renamed Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane where his 84th birthday was celebrated with a two-day sports event for mentally disabled children and some youngsters from the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund project countrywide.

"I fully appreciate the privilege of celebrating the best day of my life with the most vulnerable and marginalised children," Mandela said.

"These children allow us to appreciate the reality of our existence. They help us appreciate our similarities and celebrate our diversity." - Sapa
