The world watched as Nelson Mandela was finally laid to rest in his hometown of Qunu following a dignified and moving funeral ceremony on Sunday.
The African National Congress on Sunday extended its "warmest wishes and congratulations" to former president Nelson Mandela on his 87th birthday.
"Madiba continues to be a source of inspiration and leadership to the ANC," the party said of Mandela, who turns 87 on Monday.
"As a movement, we will continue to draw on the example of Madiba in the ongoing struggle to build a better life for all South Africans.
"The ANC wishes Madiba a happy birthday and a joyous year ahead," the party said in a statement.
The African National Congress Youth League also congratulated Mandela on his birthday.
Mandela is "a great icon who personified the struggle for freedom and the aspirations of ordinary South Africans", the ANCYL said on Sunday.
"As Madiba celebrates his birthday, we celebrate another day of being blessed with his presence and continue to draw inspiration from his exemplary leadership," the party said.
Mandela will spend his birthday at home with his family in Qunu in the Eastern Cape. - Sapa
