Former president Nelson Mandela is healthy and at his home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, his grandson Mandla Mandela said on Friday.

'He is healthy and he enjoying his stay in Qunu,” he said during the launch of a R8-million museum and memorial along the R103 near Howick, outside Pietermaritzburg, where Mandela was arrested 49 years ago.

'When we go out he asks us where we are going. If we tell him we are going to look at the cattle, he asks how many cattle we have and he jokingly asks to go with us. It is very nice to be with him.”

Mandela arrived in Qunu a few days before his 93rd birthday on July 18.

Mandla Mandela said he did not know when Mandela would return to his Johannesburg home, where he spends much of his time.

'Both are his homes. He just chooses which one he wants to use at a particular time. I don't know when he will go back to Johannesburg.”

A medical team, which was assigned to Mandela following his hospital admission for a respiratory infection in January, accompanied him to Qunu.
