The extraodinary Great Son of the soil, an Icon and selfless Stateman, he will always be remembered by all the World over, and I will be a failure if I do not congratulate him on this day, for being the person he is. The World has learned a great lesson from you Madiba, and I'm grateful for being examplary for the generation the World over. Madiba was released shortly after our country attained independence, and as young man in Sothern Africa, the pains, tortures and hardships the South African people went through, was the same metted against our people in Namibia, thus when he was released it was like a burden lifting from one's shoulder. Above all he leadership, selflessness and care to other human beings without even thinking of taking revenge against those who incacirated him, inspired me a lot. I remember your strong and memorable stance during your trial, and your consistency. Your endurance through 27 years of incarceration, and your exemplary spirit of forgiveness that gave us a beautiful country to inherit. Your spirit is exemplary, and we hope many generations of our children will emulate it. Jonathan Mthombeni

Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela. Warrior, statesman, freedom fighter, Nobel Prize winner, Africa’s most celebrated and most humble son. How we via to wear, be associated with, claim your“ 46664”. Little did your captors realise that the prison number they gave you, to rob you of your identity, to hurt and belittle and humble you, would one day be synonymous - across the world - with liberty, justice, and freedom, the catalyst for a nation so unique, so diverse, so blessed, that no rainbow could ever rival it. You, who have transcended age, colour, gender, race and nationality – have taught us to choose reconciliation; flatten our spears into plough shares; share each other's burdens and cherish and value humanity - in all its shapes and sizes and colours. You inspire us like no other. Just as you once said that talking to a man in a language he understands, goes to > read more

Our Students' Union at Reading University established a scholarship in the early sixties for one South African student a year, in support of Madiba and the struggle against apartheid. We were so moved by his strength and his humility - and he remains my idol. If more leaders would emulate him, we would have a much better world!
